Where is the playground?

This is everyone's first question.  The brand new playground is located at the site of the old Elba High School in downtown Elba (behind City Hall).  The school was condemned and demolished.  The facade remains intact and will serve as an entrance to an amphitheatre and stage that will be constructed in 2007.

The City of Elba asked the committee if they would like to use this land for the playground.  We thought -- what a great way to preserve the memories that were made at "the old school".

A special thanks goes out to the City of Elba, who donated the land for the playground and also put up the funds for the demolition of the building and clean up of the site.  The Coffee County Commission helped by bringing in fill dirt and leveling and grading the site.

Who will pay for the playground?

The total cost of the playground was approximately $170,000.  This includes all of the equipment, ground cover, trees, benches, fencing and design fees.  This does not include the things to be completed in "Phase II".

The renovation of the facade, amphitheatre, restrooms, will be completed at a later date in Phase II.  We are currently working with ADECA (Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs), the Alabama Historical Commission, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Alabama Council on Arts, and Senator Jimmy Holley on securing funds for this phase of the park development.

There are many ways that funds are being raised for TigerTown Park.  You can simply make a monetary donation, purchase a piece of equipment, buy a picket or a handprint tile, organize a fundraiser through your organization, church or business, or show your support through one of our online fundraisers.  Please visit the contributions page for detailed information.

Another playground designed by Leathers & Associates
Oklahoma City, OK

When was the playground constructed?

The Elba Community came together to build the playground September 20-24, 2006.  Construction was lead by the firm that designed the playground, Leathers and Associates.  It was WONDERFUL to see the community come together for such a terrific project!  A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who pitched in!

What about the maintenance of the playground?
The City of Elba Recreation Department is in charge of maintaining the playground, but the Elba Kiwanis Club has also accepted responsibility for making sure that it is properly maintained.  The design firm has trained city employees and Kiwanians on how to conduct routine maintenance of the playground.

We decided to go with "structural plastic" in the construction of the playground.  This means that the maintenance will be much easier and the playground will last for many, many years!

How are funds being raised?  How can you help?

  • We are still researching and applying for grant money to help with the cost of the playground.
  • We are continually selling pickets, handprint tiles, equipment and online merchandise.
  • We are seeking out more title sponsors ($10,000+ in donations).
  • We are looking for individuals, churches, clubs and businesses to help coordinate fundraising efforts on their own to benefit the playground.

For information on how you can help, please contact  Laurie Chapman, 897-1152.
